East Students Experience Life in Senegal

After completing a unit on French speaking West African countries and culture, students in Kristen Romond’s French 5 class at High School East converted their classroom into a culinary and cultural experience from Senegal.

The class learned about the French-speaking country of Senegal. During World Language Week, the students were transported into a small village of Senegal. A large mat replaced the desks where the students sat sharing a meal in typical Senegalese fashion.

The drum lead rhythms of West African Mbalax music filled the air and brought the whole experience to life. The students learned about proper mealtime and social etiquette of sitting on the communal mat and eating with their right hands following traditional cultural practices.
