Students at Smithtown Elementary have been focusing on mindfulness training. This training increases their ability to monitor and regulate their emotions, especially during challenging times. They practice these skills through breathing and other grounding techniques. Mindfulness has been shown to improve empathy or the ability to understand what another person is thinking or feeling, which improves students' awareness of others and helps them build positive relationships. It is also a way to increase focus and ability to learn in a supportive environment.
