Smithtown Central School District, in partnership with the Smithtown Industry Advisory Board, held a Sports Industry Career Conference on Feb. 8 at High School East. 

High School East and High School West students enrolled in the college sports management classes were invited to attend the conference, which included a panel of seven guest speakers from varying levels of the multibillion-dollar sports industry. The speakers gave their perspective about current sports-related career trends, the education background that will be necessary in the future, internships and stories of their own career paths. 

Guest speakers included: Steve Novick, supervising editor at MLB Advanced Media; Sean Leahy, Pro Hockey Talk writer for NBC Sports; Joe Knaus, associate director, creative works at ESPN; Neil Best, Newsday sports columnist; Jordan Schiff, director of marketing and promotions, Long Island Ducks; David Hayob, senior director, corporate partnerships, New York Mets; and Ally Futterman, coordinator, corporate sponsorships, New York Mets. Following the panel discussion, students asked questions and networked with the guest speakers.
