Fourth-grade students at Dogwood Elementary School had an in-depth look into Iroquois history thanks to lessons courtesy of Journeys Into American Indian Territory on Dec. 19.

The students rotated through different stations throughout the day during the in-house field trip, learning about the ways of the Eastern Woodland Indians. The students took a “museum tour” in the gymnasium, looking at different hunting spears and weapons and touching different types of animal skins. They learned about the tribe’s hunting and building techniques and even had a chance to spend time in a longhouse. The students also learned about the women’s role in the tribe and tried their hands at grinding corn.

During another station, students listened to the American Indian art of storytelling. Students also played traditional Iroquois games and learned about their music and instruments.
