An Important Message from Dr. James Grossane, Superintendent of Schools

I would like to share some information and clarity regarding an incident that occurred yesterday, which involved some district elementary school students' bus ride home from an after-school program.

Yesterday was the first day of this session of a district-run after-school program for English Language Learners (ELL) held at Tackan Elementary School for students that reside in Nesconset and St. James. Nine students in kindergarten, first and second grade attended this program and got on a bus (operated by Suffolk Transportation) to go home when the program ended at 4:15 p.m. After the first child was dropped off, the bus driver apparently got lost and was unable to proceed on the route. A concerned parent notified the police who were able to locate the bus and escort it back to school grounds where the principal and parents were waiting.

This is an extremely unfortunate and isolated incident. None of the children were ever in any danger and were all returned unharmed to their parents.
