Magnet Program Attracts Students’ Attention

As part of a hands-on lesson in the forces of attraction, first-grade students at Tackan Elementary participated in a magnet workshop from the Long Island Center for Arts and Sciences on Jan. 25.

Using different types of magnets and various objects, they spent the morning learning the basics of why certain objects had a magnetic attraction and the strength of different magnets. Following the demonstration, the first-graders conducted their own experiments, making two piles of objects they predicted to be magnetic and those that were not. They then tested their theories to see the accuracy of their predictions.
