Connecting to Community

Working for the betterment of their own community, students in Wendy Herman’s class at Smithtown Elementary were tasked with creating a community project.

The project required ideas and designs for a community center in Smithtown based on an area of need the students have witnessed. Students presented ideas to their classmates with thoughtful insight on what would best serve their community. Presenting to their classmates serving as the “town board members,” ideas included a solar energy building, a park for students with special needs, a wildlife exhibit, a community crop center and a park where the community could gather without mobile distractions.

They drafted formal letter writing with persuasive phrases, which Mrs. Herman will send to representatives at the Town of Smithtown Town Hall for feedback.

Students were asked to consider the cost, dimensions, and staff required to bring their vision to life. At home, the students created models, dioramas and posters to better illustrate their ideas.
