Learning the Art of Storytelling

Fourth-graders at St. James Elementary had a special visit from storyteller/author Heather Forest on Nov. 30. Ms. Forest has authored many books, such as “Wonder Tales from Around the World,” “Wisdom Tales from Around the World” and “Stone Soup,” taking old folktales and rewriting them in her own words.

Using music to help tell stories, Ms. Forest encouraged audience participation as she relayed fables and folktales such as “The Little Red Hen” and “A Big Quiet House.” Ms. Forest spoke to the students about using their imagination to tell a story. She gave examples of how they could retell a familiar story using their imagination to create a completely new version.

Following the assembly, Ms. Forest visited with fourth-graders in their classroom to provide individual instruction on the art of storytelling. She discussed the basic components of telling/writing a story and worked with the students to develop their writing and listening skills.
