A Message from the Superintendent

Dear Smithtown Community,

During their Oct. 25 meeting, the Board of Education approved entering into a contract with Southern Land Company, LLC for the sale of the district’s New York Avenue property (the building structure and surrounding land). Currently, the building is being utilized for district offices.

It is anticipated that SLC will build one- and two-bedroom apartments in keeping with the architectural style of Smithtown. Though still in the early stages of the contract, if finalized, the district would receive the greater of $71,000 per approved unit or $14,768,000 for the sale of the building. As part of the contract, there is a 75-day “due diligence” period, during which SLC has the right to back out of the purchase.

The Board of Education and administration believe that the proposed use of the property is one that would benefit our school community. If finalized, the sale will potentially expand our tax base, lowering the burden on our residents, and provide additional resources to enhance our educational programs.

As more details are finalized, we will keep our community updated on the status of sale.
