Summer Programs Prep for New School Year

The district has been abuzz with activity this summer as students are taking part in programs housed at Smithtown Elementary.

For six weeks in July and August, K-8 students work in small class settings as part of the Extended School Year Program. Students focus on academic goals and social-emotional skills in an effort to prevent regression during the summer months. This year’s program was based on the summer Olympics, which included culminating activities such as an Olympic Field Day and carnival.

More than 100 K-8 students also participate in the summer reading program during four weeks in July and August, choosing from two sessions in the mornings. The program gives students an extra boost and helps hone their reading skills in preparation for the upcoming school year.
