At the April 12 Board of Education meeting, the board recognized High School East seniors Emily McDermott and Thomas Silvester as finalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

Emily and Thomas were among the 1.5 million juniors who entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, commonly known as the PSAT. The nationwide pool of finalists, which represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Emily, who will be attending MIT next fall and Thomas, who will go to Syracuse University, are shown here with Superintendent Dr. James Grossane and Board of Education President Christopher Alcure.
