Lessons in Genetic Engineering

Students at Accompsett Middle School participated in a hands-on DNA Lab with representatives from Brookhaven National Laboratory on March 30 and 31. They used genetic engineering to move genes from one organism to another.

The class learned about the GFP gene found in certain species of jellyfish.  GFP causes the jellyfish to give off a certain florescent green light when they become excited. During the experiment, students added E. coli bacteria cells to the jellyfish gene. Adding the GFP gene to the E. coli gives the new gene the ability to glow florescent green when exposed to ultra-violet light.
