Merit Scholar Recognition

High School East seniors Emily McDermott and Thomas Silvester were recognized with Certificates of Merit as finalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Competition. Emily and Thomas were among the 1.5 million juniors who entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, commonly known as the PSAT. The nationwide pool of finalists, which represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. Emily and Thomas are shown here with (from left) HSE Principal Ed Thompson and HSE guidance counselors Diane Giannico and Robert Woods.
