Fourth-grade students in Susan Rodichok’s class at Smithtown Elementary became mini-sleuths on Feb. 11. Ms. Guglielmo, former Suffolk County Crime Laboratory forensic scientist, created a mock scenario in which an expensive piece of jewelry was stolen right before Valentine’s Day. Students were tasked with comparing fingerprint cards from four suspects to see if any of the fingerprints matched the print found on the vault, near the item that was stolen.

Students also needed to examine animal hair patterns to see if there was a match to the crime scene evidence. In addition to utilizing their critical thinking skills to solve the crime, students had fun dusting and lifting latent fingerprints and making a tape lift to examine evidence.
