Before schools closed, the fifth graders at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School worked with the district’s English language arts coach Patricia Gallery to deepen their understanding of theme analysis and application. After identifying the themes of common songs and articulating the themes in complete sentences, students shared ideas about how understanding themes can help us to be better humans. As a culminating activity, students used clues from the blurb and book jacket to infer theme statements and created mini graffiti walls to showcase the book covers and themes.
